Rafting in Carter County
Doe
and Watauga Rivers both offer visitors and locals who want to experience
the outdoors and challenge their paddling skills. Each river offers
a unique whitewater experience that you will remember. To book whitewater rafting or calm water rafting/kayak tours, visit Watauga Kayak Tours and Outfitters.
The Doe
The Doe River is primarily a wet-weather stream, since it's free
flowing. Although it can be run in mid summer during years with
plenty of rainfall. There is a 5.5 mile stretch between Hampton
and Elizabethton that are rated class I and II.
The Watauga
The friendly section of whitewater on the Watauga begins below the
Wilbur Dam and winds past agricultural lands into the town of Elizabethton.
An easy float trip, with a couple of class I and II rapids. Commercial
rafting is available for portions of this 10 -mile section.
Any time you are planning a day on the river, remember to wear
a flotation device and a helmet. It's always good to let somebody
know your plans and when you are planning to return. If you are
a novice it's a good idea to paddle with experienced boaters or guides
who know proper river safety.
